NAGOYAUndiscovered art museums and galleries

Many people are bypassing the noisy cities to instead travel the Samurai Route in search of “true” Japan and traditional sites. The “one-of-a-kind” status of the route developed over a number of years leveraging the unique features will overwhelm travelers with its appeal. The starting point on this route is Nagoya, which is also home to a wide range of art.
The Furukawa Art Museum and Tamezaburo Memorial Hall is a private art museum that houses the artwork collected by the capitalist Tamezaburo Furukawa. The 2,800 piece collection includes Japanese paintings, porcelain, traditional crafts and medieval Western illuminated manuscripts. At the Tamezaburo Memorial Hall located near the main building, the sukiya style main residence, tearoom and Japanese garden are open to the public and are excellent places to rest. In addition, visitors will be overwhelmed by the exquisite detail of their design features.
At the Yamazaki Mazak Museum of Art, visitors will be greeted by artwork spanning 300 years of French art. The exhibition rooms recreate the original atmosphere of the residence, allowing visitors to leisurely view the artwork. The reason some of the paintings are displayed without frames is based on a desire to “show the depth of French art” of the paintings and enable visitors to directly feel the passion of the artist, including the brushwork and colors.
Lastly, gallery N is dedicated to conveying contemporary Japanese art to the world. The building designed by talented architect Makoto Tanijiri is also a sight to behold.
While spending quiet time experiencing real art, the expectations for the coming travels start to build.
Furukawa Art Museum
The Furukawa Art Museum exhibits the excellent artwork collected by the capitalist Tamezaburo Furukawa. The museum also holds other events, including special exhibits several times a year, rotating exhibits centered on the museum’s permanent collection and art lectures. At the Tamezaburo Memorial Hall located nearby, the sukiya style “Ishuntei” built in the early Showa Period as the main residence, as well as the tearoom “Chisokuan” and Japanese garden, are open to the public, and visitors should pay attention to the exquisite design features found inside. In addition to holding exhibitions, the facilities can be used for enjoying the same matcha green tea preferred by Tamezaburo himself.
