Dazaifu Tenmangu, dedicated to the revered scholar Sugawara no Michizane, is currently undergoing extensive renovations in preparation for the 2027 Dazaifu Tenmangu Shikinen Taisai (Periodic Grand Festival). During this period, visitors can experience a temporary shrine designed by architect Sou Fujimoto. The shrine’s design, inspired by the legend of the “Flying Plum Tree” (Tobiume) which flew to Dazaifu out of affection for Michizane, features a lush forest growing atop its roof, seamlessly blending with the surrounding nature. Soft natural light pours through the circular skylights in the ceiling, creating a serene atmosphere that feels as though it connects the divine world with the human realm.The shrine also features ceremonial drapes by designer Maiko Kurokawa, where ancient and modern techniques meet, symbolizing the continuity of tradition.

Kamado Shrine, located at the foot of Mount Hōman, has long been revered for its spiritual significance, particularly for matchmaking and protection. The shrine underwent renovations in 2013 to mark its 1,350th anniversary, with a vision to create a place that would continue to be loved for the next hundred years. The new amulet office, harmoniously blending with the surrounding nature, reflects this desire. The shrine is enveloped by lush greenery and sacred trees, offering a serene environment that invites visitors to reflect and connect with the divine.
