A trip on the Samurai Route

The Samurai Route is not very well-known in Japan.The route extends from Nagoya to the Hokuriku region through Hida-Takayama and Shirakawa-go. Unlike tourism centered in urban areas such as Tokyo and Osaka, this route provides an opportunity to experience historical streetscapes and a traditional side of Japan. Named by a European travel agency, the route is extremely popular with foreign tourists.

Several opinions exist, but there are said to be two routes. One extends from Nagoya to Toyama through Takayama, Shirakawa-go and Gokayama, and the other starts in Nagoya and runs through Takayama and Shirakawa-go before ending in Kanazawa. Both routes include the appeal of each region.

Let’s take a look at the famous sites along the route that everyone should visit at least once, including an art museum in Nagoya that is wellknown only to those in the know, the Takayama Festival held for the first time in 3 years, gassho-zukuri farmhouses, Toyama sake and the streetscape and gourmet of Kanazawa.
